First The Dutch Notary (Notaris) does not exist in the Anglo-American (the common) law system. This profession comes from the civil law system, originating in the old Latin law and "de Notaris" is a specialized lawyer, with a master's degree in civil-law. The Notaris is an independent legal professional appointed by the Governor of the Netherlands Antilles.

The Notary deals with the civil law. He draws up deeds to establish or record legal situations, mainly: real estate, general business, family, shipping, and corporate law. The Notaris holds a monopoly in these fields and in many cases where deeds are required by law.
